Imperfect Action Beats Perfection

Embracing Imperfect Action: My Path to Progress in Fitness and Life

In a world that often glorifies perfection, it’s incredibly easy to get stuck waiting for that “perfect” moment to finally start. In this episode of Strength for the Journey, I’m diving into my own struggle with perfection paralysis and sharing how taking imperfect action is the real key to moving forward.

The Challenge of Staying Consistent

We’ve all been there: you have a plan for the week, and then life happens. Lately, I’ve been working to regain my own consistency after a big move. I had my workouts all mapped out, but when a friend’s son had a basketball game, my original plan went out the window.

In the past, I might have used that as an excuse to skip the day entirely. Instead, I chose to adapt. I utilized my friend’s treadmill during my lunch break. It wasn’t the “perfect” gym session I envisioned, but it was action. This kind of flexibility is what keeps us in the game when life gets busy.

Learning the Power of Flexibility

I’ve spent a lot of my fitness journey adhering to very strict schedules and nutrition plans. While that discipline can be helpful, I’ve realized that being too rigid can actually prevent us from enjoying our lives and connecting with others.

By allowing room for the unexpected in my training, I’m finding that I can still reach my fitness goals without missing out on quality time with friends. The goal is to enjoy the journey, not just check a box on a perfect to-do list.

Overcoming Perfection Paralysis

If you’ve ever felt frozen by the fear that your work or your workout won’t be “good enough,” you’re experiencing perfection paralysis. I first had to confront this head-on during my master’s program, where I was forced to publish my assignments online.

Whether it was a DIY tutorial or a complex project, I had to learn that “good enough” is often more valuable and impactful than something that stays unfinished because it isn’t perfect. Growth requires movement, and movement is rarely tidy.

My Challenge to You

In this episode, I share how my time as an EdTech TOSA during the pandemic reinforced this: we often don’t have the luxury of waiting for perfect conditions. We just have to start.

I want to challenge you today to identify one goal you’ve been procrastinating on. What is one imperfect step you can take right now? Whether it’s in your fitness, your career, or a personal project, the most important thing you can do is just begin.
