My GLP-1 Journey

GLP-1 medication journey

As a personal trainer and nutrition coach for the past few years, I’ve dedicated myself to guiding others on their paths to healthier living. Now, I’m embarking on a new and deeply personal journey, one that requires me to be transparent and vulnerable. I’ve begun taking GLP-1 medication for weight loss, and I want to share my journey openly, not only for my own understanding but also in the hopes that it will resonate with and help others.

This decision feels significant, even a little daunting, particularly given my role. However, I believe that sharing my story, including the struggles and the tools I’m using, can provide valuable insights and support to those navigating similar challenges. This is the story of how I’m using GLP-1s, and how it fits into my overall health strategy.

Despite this setback, I remained committed to my health, working with a coach to improve my relationship with food and establish solid habit foundations. For 18 months, I managed to maintain my weight, even while actively trying to lose more.

A History of Struggle and Resilience

My relationship with weight has been a lifelong journey. I’ve written extensively about my numerous weight loss attempts, and specifically, my recent experience with the oral medication Contrave. Not that long ago, I weighed over 300 pounds. In 2018-2019, I achieved a significant milestone, losing over 100 pounds and maintaining that loss for more than a year.

Life, however, has a way of throwing curveballs. When my father fell ill and subsequently passed away in 2022, maintaining that weight loss became incredibly challenging. Stress and grief took their toll, and over time, I regained about 30 pounds.

The Breaking Point

Then, in December 2024, my mother suffered a fall, breaking her hip and shoulder. The ensuing two months were a whirlwind of stress and uncertainty as we navigated her surgeries, recovery, and eventual passing on February 23rd. During this period, the habit foundations I had worked so hard to maintain crumbled. The sheer mental and emotional energy required to manage a full-time job, this coaching business, and my mother’s care left little room for anything else. My workout consistency faltered, and the “food noise,” that persistent mental chatter about food, returned with a vengeance.

Knowing that I had a doctor’s appointment scheduled for March 15th, I subconsciously allowed myself to ease off the fight against those food cravings. I knew I would be discussing GLP-1 medication, and I used the energy typically reserved for maintaining my habits to cope with the overwhelming circumstances.

Over those two months, I gained another 10-15 pounds, and my clothes grew tighter. I noticed the change in my face, a telltale sign of weight fluctuation for me. Beyond the scale, I felt the familiar sluggishness and fatigue that accompanied the weight gain.

The Decision for GLP-1 and the First Steps

On March 15th, I went to the doctor and left with a prescription for semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. The FDA approves these medications for weight loss for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or a BMI of 27 or higher with at least one weight-related condition, who have struggled with previous weight loss attempts. This is important to note. The medication is not a quick fix, and is approved for those who have tried other methods.

I scheduled my first injection for March 19th, waiting until my wife was home for support and postponing it slightly to avoid potential side effects during a pre-planned Disneyland trip. I wanted to be in a stable environment as I began this new phase.

The Initial Experience

My emotions were a mix of hope and apprehension. I was uncertain about how my body would react to the medication, particularly concerning the common gastrointestinal side effects. In the first two days I lost three pounds, which I attribute primarily to water weight. Since then, my weight loss has settled in at about 1.5 lbs/week, which is perfectly normal and expected. Rapid weight loss is neither healthy nor sustainable.

What I have experienced is a significant reduction in food noise. The constant mental focus on food has diminished, allowing me to more easily adhere to my established nutritional habits. The afternoon binge urges, particularly my penchant for peanut butter and chocolate chips, have disappeared. My desire for daily desserts has also subsided, replaced by an occasional craving.

Interestingly, I know I can still enjoy these foods if I choose to. However, the urge is significantly reduced. I’ve also noticed that I feel full much faster after consuming smaller portions. My focus has returned to the habits I have built of prioritizing protein and fiber to ensure I meet my body’s nutritional needs.

The Long Game

This is just the beginning of the next phase of my “journey to fit,” a journey that has spanned, honestly, more than two decades. In the past, I would often berate myself for perceived failures, feeling like I was starting over from scratch. Today, I feel differently. I view this as a continuation of my learning process, a deeper understanding of my body and its responses. I am optimistic about what lies ahead.

Addressing the Elephant in the Room

As a fitness and nutrition coach, I understand the questions that may arise. How can I advocate for healthy habits while simultaneously using medication to aid my own weight loss? The answer is simple: I believe in the power of both. The foundations I teach—balanced nutrition, a healthy relationship with food, and regular exercise—are essential for a well-lived life, regardless of weight loss goals. Some individuals can achieve these goals without medication, while others require additional support.

I do not feel shame in taking allergy medication to manage my allergies. Similarly, I view GLP-1 medications as a tool to help individuals achieve a more balanced and healthy life. Taking these medications is not a shortcut or a sign of weakness. It’s a means of enhancing the effectiveness of the healthy habits I already practice and teach.

How GLP-1 Medications Work

GLP-1 receptor agonists, like semaglutide, mimic the naturally occurring glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) hormone. This hormone plays a crucial role in regulating appetite and blood sugar levels. Here’s a breakdown of how these medications work:

  • Appetite Regulation: GLP-1 increases feelings of fullness and satiety, reducing overall food intake. This is accomplished by slowing gastric emptying, which makes you feel full longer.
  • Blood Sugar Control: GLP-1 stimulates insulin release in response to elevated blood sugar levels, helping to regulate glucose metabolism.
  • Brain Signaling: GLP-1 acts on receptors in the brain, influencing appetite and food cravings.
  • Potential for Weight Loss: By reducing appetite and promoting feelings of fullness, GLP-1 medications can contribute to significant weight loss.

Important Considerations

While GLP-1 medications can be effective, they are not without potential side effects. The most common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. These side effects are often temporary and can be managed by adjusting the dosage and dietary habits. My doctor specifically mentioned avoiding high fat and high sugar foods to minimize these issues.

It’s also essential to remember that these medications are not a substitute for healthy lifestyle habits. A balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress management are crucial for long-term weight management and overall health.

Looking Ahead

I am committed to sharing my journey with honesty and transparency. I believe that by sharing my experiences, I can help others navigate their own weight loss journeys with greater understanding and compassion. This is not a story of giving up on healthy habits, but rather a story of embracing all available tools to achieve a healthier, more balanced life. It’s a story of resilience, adaptation, and a continued commitment to well-being. I will continue to update you on my progress, sharing my insights and experiences along the way. Thank you for being a part of my journey.
